PM101: Revenue Cycle Management


Speaker: Debra L. Mitchell, RN, BSN, MBA, Retired Administrator, Children’s Orthopaedics and Scoliosis Surgery Associates

Revenue cycle management (RCM) is more than billing patients. RCM is the lifeblood of any practice — private or nonprofit.  Understanding the key factors that influence your cycle can shorten your days in AR, protect your practice, and accelerate the revenue cycle.  


After this session, you will:

  • Be able to identify the essential elements: management, organizational model, practice management system, standards and controls, coding, and compliance.
  • Know how to establish work flows essentials: structuring department work flows to maximize operational efficiencies and achieve performance measures - ensuring pt demographic, insurance, and coding information is entered accurately and timely.
  • Understanding and utilizing data: essential components of the daily, weekly, monthly, and annual reporting required to set benchmarks, identify pitfalls, and analyze the financial health of the practice.


About the Speaker

Debra Mitchell is a retired administrator of Children’s Orthopaedics and Scoliosis Surgery Associates, a private practice with seven pediatric orthopedic surgeons and eight PAs. The practice is located in St. Petersburg, Florida at John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. Mitchell has a Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) degree, as well as a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) degree.

She has been a member of the American Alliance of Orthopaedic Executives (AAOE) since 1999. She has served on Advocacy Task Force, Advocacy Council, AAOE Nominating Committee, Education Task Force, and Education Council.

She has been a member of the Florida Bones since 2000.  She was Program/Education Director for the Florida Bones meeting in 2002. She served as President of Florida Bones (2008-2009), and a member Board of Directors of the Florida Orthopaedic Risk Purchasing Group (2008 and again in 2014, 2015, 2016).
