Hartford, CT and Louisville, KY - Health insurance giants Aetna and Humana have abandoned their $37 billion merger after a federal judge ruled that the merger does not stand antitrust scrutiny.

"While we continue to believe that a combined company would create greater value for health care consumers through improved affordability and quality, the current environment makes it too challenging to continue pursuing the transaction," Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini said in a statement, according to Politico.

The decision comes several days after Anthem announced it would appeal another judge's ruling prohibiting the merger of Anthem and Cigna and could be a view into how the new Trump administration will handle insurance antitrust issues. However, the administration has not given any public indication that it would continue the Obama administration's objections to the mergers.
