Washington, DC - Dr Tom Price, an orthopaedic surgeon and member of the House of Representatives from Georgia, was confirmed by the United States Senate 52 - 47 to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). HHS houses the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) which administers the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

Dr. Price was a controversial nominee with Senate Democrats opposed to his position on the Affordable Care Act (ACA), previous statements made regarding birth control, and previous financial investments. Senate Republicans have praised Price's nomination touting his experience working under government regulation of the healthcare industry and his commitment to innovation in federal healthcare programs.

Senate Democrats continued using a tactic they have used for several nominations by holding the Senate floor for the maximum 30 hours they are allowed under Senate rules once the chamber voted to end debate on the nomination.

President Trump had indicated that once Dr. Price was confirmed to his new role, the administration would release its plan to replace the Affordable Care Act but other statements have indicated that a replacement plan would not be unveiled until the end of the year. Dr. Price will now play a major role in the administration of the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, Medicaid, and the various programs that make up these pillars of American health policy.
