In this AAOE Member in the Spotlight feature, meet AAOE member and Education Council volunteer Debi Mitchell,RN, BSN, MBAChildren's Orthopaedic & Scoliosis Surgery Associates LLP. Debi is the speaker for the October 13 AAOE Peer to Peer Webinar: Revenue Cycle and Work Flow.

Tell us why you became a member of AAOE.

I believe if you are interested in furthering your career, joining a professional association is a good start.

What is the best advice you've ever been given?

Respect is not a thing that comes through name, profession or money. Respect is something earned through the things you do and the way you live. I also believe Charles Swindoll was right when he said "Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. "

What is at the top of your bucket list and why?

To travel in Italy with my husband. We have had several trips planned and they have been canceled due to emergencies. Want to do it before I get much older.

What are your top three goals for 2016?

Goal #1 - Do the final preparation for financial freedom. I plan to retire in 2 years.

Goal #2 Caring for others, I want to have empathy for what others are feeling; listen to others; make others happy.

Goal # 3 - I want to be happy and content; feeling satisfied with my life; feeling good about myself

Name your favorite movie or song. Does it make you laugh or cry (or both)?

Ferris Bueller's Day Off -- Makes me laugh! "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." — Ferris Bueller

Tell us about your greatest accomplishment.

My greatest accomplishment is still loving the same man for 40 years and I picked him up in a bar! I have been married for 33 years (we went out for 7 before getting married - people didn't get married that fast in the 70's). We have been together for 40 years.

What do you enjoy the most about your career and why?

The challenges we face every day. Trying to figure out the best strategy to accomplish a goal.

If you could pick any other career, what would you do?

I started out as an RN (still one) but was always in charge, ended up managing an ASC. The physicians who owned the ASC had problems in their office and asked me to do it. I found both challenging. As a matter of fact, I think running a physician practice is more challenging that running an ASC.

What do you do when you're not at work?

Cook, travel, and party.

What words of wisdom do you have for new AAOE members?

“Hope is not a strategy.” My dad used to say this whenever someone says “I hope this works out” or something. Pretty much it means you can’t rely on something working out, if you want it to work do something to make it happen!

For New AAOE Members: What are you looking to get out of your AAOE membership?

There are lots of benefits to being a member of AAOE. People feel more secure when they know that they have others around them who share their goals and care about their progress. That is one reason why it can be so stressful to move to another job. Suddenly, you are cut off from your regular group. Let AAOE be your group!
