The 2016 Annual Conference of the American Association of Orthopaedic Executives (AAOE) took place June 9-12 in San Francisco, California. Each year, the conference brings together orthopaedic practice professionals to network and attend educational sessions on hot industry topics. Approximately 1,100 individuals attended this year’s conference, which was held at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square.

The session lineup included Instructional Course Lectures (ICLs) divided into eight topical tracks to cover a wide range of subjects relevant to industry professionals. Two rounds of Fast Tracks allowed attendees to go to five different sessions in one hour. Six organizations also approved Continuing Education Units (CEUs) at the conference, allowing attendees to earn CEUs for various sessions.

The 2016 keynote speakers were Patrick Lencioni, author of 10 books and founder of the Table Group, and Shari Harley, author of How to Say Anything to Anyone and founder of Candid Culture. During both keynote sessions, attendees learned how to strengthen their organization’s culture.

Social and networking events were held during the conference. Two networking events,

Networking by Region and Networking by Practice Size, provided attendees with a fun, relaxed setting to meet peers from similar backgrounds and practices. Attendees were also invited to the Opening Reception at City Hall. The black-tie-optional evening included dinner, drinks, and a red carpet. Past AAOE Presidents were recognized by outgoing President Jim Kidd.

138 exhibiting companies had booths in the Exhibitor Showcase and Marketplace. Attendees were able to walk through the Showcase and Marketplace and speak with exhibitors offering products relevant to their practice.

A major success of the conference was raising $6,008.31 for Larkin Street Youth Services, an organization that helps homeless and at-risk youth in San Francisco. Material donations were also given to the organization, including chairs and a brand new flat screen TV. A significant portion of these donations were made during the conference due to the generous support of attendees.

The 2016 Annual Conference offered a great selection of sessions and events. In the words of Jerald Forrester, MBA, FACMPE, who attended the conference: “I would say it was likely the best conference I’ve been to in many years. A lot going on in our business and a lot to keep track of as some of us merge, some of us become academic or hospital employed or even stay independent. I would say that conferences like this definitely help prepare us for these challenges.”

AAOE is looking to make the 2017 Annual Conference an even bigger success. It will be held in the city where the association is headquartered, Indianapolis, Indiana April 22-25.

Once again the AAOE staff and volunteers outdid themselves. This years conference was great success and I learned a lot of valuable information that we are already implementing at The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics. Thanks to all. See you next year.
