What does it mean to have integrity? In our professional world integrity shows in our honesty with anything from the hours we work to be consistent with our work responsibilities, even the boring ones! Integrity is also about being forthcoming when mistakes are made, regardless if the mistake could have been preventable.  Those working in healthcare must realize the importance of having integrity with all elements of compliance.

  • Examples of what it means to have integrity in our personal and professional lives.
  • How to handle challenges to integrity and manage ignorance.
  • Section 1557 of the ACA Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the dangers that ignorance creates with discrimination and intolerance.
  • How to ensure the integrity of personal health information (PHI) and combat risks to it.
  • How with the proper use of a Security Risk Analysis (SRA) organizations can show their integrity to compliance and protect themselves from risks.
  • Integrity in recognizing, reporting and creating a corrective action when a breach occurs.
  • The integrity of whistleblowers regardless of fear of retaliation, along with what protections are in place for employees who are expose illegal or unethical violations.
  • Policies, procedures, ethics and laws that in place to protect integrity and limit ignorance.
  • The balance of integrity and ignorance in ethical dilemmas.

Sounds easy right? But what happens when your personal integrity conflicts with your professional responsibilities? Recognizing how to apply integrity in challenging situations and knowing what the law requires is a valuable tool for anyone working in the healthcare industry, from physicians to housekeeping. A natural enemy to integrity is ignorance. Ignorance can stem from our own inherited biases, or from a lack of education.
