2019 Is the Year to Participate in the Benchmarking Survey. Here’s Why!

Participating in the AAOE Benchmarking Survey benefits you, your practice, and the orthopedic community. You will receive free access to the AAOE Benchmarking Results that you can use to compare your practice’s performance on key operational metrics to other participating practices. Your practice will have the data needed to make data-driven decisions affecting revenue, expenses, overhead, compensation, productivity, staffing, and other key areas. And increased participation allows for more customized comparisons based on practice size, provider specialty, region, state, and other crucial factors.

The AAOE Benchmarking Survey has been enhanced to make data entry as simple and efficient as possible. If you have considered participating in the past, this is the year to give it a try! AAOE staff and members of the Data Analytics & Benchmarking Council are available to assist you throughout the process. For those of you who participated in last year’s survey, the new features outlined below will make the benchmarking survey even easier to complete!

New features in the Benchmarking Survey for Data Year 2018 include:

Customization

After answering a few questions about what services (e.g., MRI, physical therapy, DME) are included in your practice, your online survey will remove sections and questions that are not relevant to your practice.

Populating Data from Previous Years

If you participated in the Benchmarking Survey for Data Year 2017, you will have the ability to populate selected data elements from that survey into this year’s survey. This will save time and allow you to focus on entering the data that is most likely to change each year.

Summary Data

The process of verifying the data entered into the online survey will be even easier this year with planned enhancements to section level and Income Statement Summary pages.

Data Definitions

Clearly defining the data to be collected in a benchmarking survey is essential to the consistency and validity of the data. Data definitions will be available directly in the online survey and in a comprehensive survey guide that can be used as a reference as you complete the survey.

Clarification of Results Based on Data

Understanding how the data you are entering can be used for decision making and benchmarking comparisons can help justify the time spent completing the survey. Embedded videos located within the survey will clarify the results that are generated based on the data elements collected.

Survey within the Survey

To support ongoing improvements in the AAOE Benchmarking Survey, participants will be given the opportunity to assess the value of the data elements included. The ratings assigned by survey participants to the data elements will be used to inform the development of the AAOE Benchmarking Results and next year’s survey.

The new features listed above build upon the online survey that was introduced last year. The following functionality will still be available in the Benchmarking Survey for Data Year 2018.

Save and Continue

Most practice administrators complete the AAOE Benchmarking Survey over a period of time, making the ability to save progress in the survey and return to it later a fundamental feature of the online survey. This year, we have created a Benchmarking Survey calendar to provide recommended data to pull or enter each month from now through June to break down the survey to make it easier than ever to fit into your busy schedule.

Survey Navigation

Participants can progress through the online survey in the order in which it is presented by using the Save and Continue options or skip to sections for which data is readily available by using the Jump to Section menu.

Survey Progress

Easily monitor your progress in the benchmarking survey using the Survey Progress bar that appears at the top of each page. Please note that there is no requirement that you provide all of the data requested or even all of the sections. You can tell us which sections you will be completing and the progress bar will adjust to reflect the status of data entry in those sections.

Export Your Data

Completing the AAOE Benchmarking Survey requires you to collect, compile, and analyze data on multiple aspects of your practice. The ability to access that data after it is entered online and in a format that can be integrated with existing spreadsheets and databases used by your practice is important. Thus, AAOE developed the ability to export the results entered into the online survey into a CSV file that you can save and use throughout the year.

Multiple Data Entry Formats

Data are entered into basic data entry fields or into grids that allow multiple rows of data to be added to a table for easy review of your data. Data validation parameters are applied to many fields to limit errors in data entry.
