Nominations for AAOE’s 2019 Awards of Excellence are open for the next few weeks, so during this time we’ll spotlight different award categories and past winners to spark your interest and ideas of who you can nominate.

Each of these prestigious awards recognizes an AAOE member who has gone above and beyond, serving his or her practice, the association, and the industry during the past year. Members are peer- or self-nominated, and nominations will be judged anonymously by members of AAOE’s Awards Task Force.

This week’s spotlight is on the Collaborate Champion.

AAOE Collaborate is an online community for members to communicate directly with peers to share experience and information. The Collaborate Champion is awarded to a member who has consistently contributed with valuable information that is positive, knowledgeable, and that benefits other members while supporting AAOE’s mission and values.

The 2018 Collaborate Champion is Joseph Mathews, PT, DPT, Practice Administrator, Advanced Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Houston, Texas. AAOE members who participate on Collaborate are familiar with Mathews’ reliable and dedicated voice in the community, his name consistently appearing in discussion threads.

“If I don’t know something, I’m going to ask a question about it,” says Mathews, explaining his interest in the type of knowledge-sharing that occurs on Collaborate. The value of asking and answering questions makes Collaborate a daily habit for him.

“Have you ever noticed I’ll do several posts at a time?” he asks. “If I have time at night after work, I’ll go on Collaborate and see if there are any questions I can help with or if there’s something I can learn. If I can’t get on Collaborate at night, the first thing I do in the morning is get on.”

Even if he doesn’t have an answer to a question, he will research a topic if it interests him and share his findings with the group. This helps him keep up with what’s happening in the industry.  In fact, he shares, “Collaborate is my healthcare news.”

Being named 2018 Collaborate Champion was “very humbling,” Mathews recalls, especially because he had nominated other AAOE members for the very same award. He refers to each of them as his Collaborate Champions because they are his go-to resources for peer advice. And he speculates that most Collaborate users have their own champions, too.
