How many surveys do you do?
About 42,600,000 results. Those are results from a Google search for "patient satisfaction surveys."
And a search for "patient reported outcomes" yields another 106,000,000 results. Wow!
Based on those numbers, you and everybody you know must be surveying patients!
But not all surveys are created equal! Even something short and simple can trip us up if we aren't careful.
Here are some tips to get back-to-basics for your next survey.

  • Expecting the wrong questions to yield the right results. You could spend time creating your own survey, testing it, making adjustments, and reworking it time and again. Or you could start with an existing survey. Once you know what problem you are trying to solve, start looking for existing surveys. You benefit from the testing and tweaking already done.
  • The survey doesn't provide context outside your practice. You think it's good that80% of your patients had a good experience. But wouldn't it be more useful to know how that compares to others? Surveys widely used in the industry would allow you to know whether practices of a similar size or in the same geographic area have higher or lower satisfaction scores. The context provided by comparisons translates into more actionable results.
  • There's no plan for using the survey results. This is the biggest pitfall of them all! Not only are you wasting your time and your staff's time, you also are wasting a patient's time. And worst of all, you are misleading the patient and your staff into believing whatever you are asking actually matters.
