Washington, DC - President Donald Trump has nominated Alex Azar, a former President at Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals, to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Azar will likely be the second Secretary of HHS in the Trump administration following in the footsteps of Georgia Congressman Tom Price.

Azar has been a frequent critic of the Affordable Care Act but will likely use the authority contained in the law to steer implementation into a more conservative direction. In a June interview with Bloomberg Television, Azar stated: "I'm not one to say many good things about Obamacare, but one of the nice things in it is it does give tremendous amount of authority to the secretary of HHS."

According to the Washington Post, Senate Democrats have already begun preparing for confirmation hearings and will focus on his ties to the pharmaceutical industry, his intended implementation of the ACA, and his position on high drug prices.

Expect confirmation hearings to be completed by the end of December with a possible confirmation vote in early January.
