Created by your peers in the operations of orthopaedic organizations, the AAOE Casting & Splinting Program provides an easy, cost-effective solution for standardizing your casting and splinting training.

Still wondering whether the program is right for you? Here's some insight from David Everman, MD, Strand Orthopaedic Consultants, who served as a proctor for a casting tech who recently completed the program.

Why did you participate in the AAOE Casting and Splinting Program?

"Our office wanted to provide a structured and comprehensive program to help our new cast tech learn appropriate casting and splinting techniques. We wanted to ensure that in his early training period he would be exposed to numerous techniques and types of casts/splints. We also wanted resources that he could refer to at his convenience to review if he had questions later."

Who do you recommend this program for?

"I would recommend that cast technicians just starting out strongly consider this program. The videos are an excellent resource for not only initial instructions but review, as well. It allows newer technicians to learn at their own pace."

What advice can you give to other proctors and participants in the program?

"It is sometimes difficult for experienced cast technicians to teach casting to a new cast technician. Everyone has a little bit different technique for applying casts and splints. The videos provide a resource that can be referred to without both techs having to stop what they are doing. It provides an aid and a little backup until a less experienced technician gains enough experience to feel confident in what he or she is doing. The technician can review casting and splinting videos as needed especially when having to apply a new or infrequently used type of splint or cast."
