Baltimore, MD - The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) sent the final rule of the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) today. This is the final step before the final rule is published in the Federal Register.
CMS is required by statute to have the rule finished by November 1, 2016. Provided it only takes OMB a month and a half to review the final rule, CMS will likely meet that deadline. CMS has already indicated that the final rule, at least for 2017, will change from the proposed rule with the agency announcing in a blog post that clinicians would have four options for complying with the requirements of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) which created MIPS. A summary of these changes can be found here.
