AAOE Community Legacy Project: Larkin Street Youth Services in San Francisco
Monday, April 11, 2016
Did you know that more than 1,500 young people sleep on San Francisco’s streets every night? For many youth, living on the streets is safer than staying home because of violence, limited family resources and/or rejection. Many have been sexually, physically or emotionally abused and have mental health and substance abuse issues.
For the past 30 years, Larkin Street Youth Services has helped homeless and runaway youth, ages 12 -24, to find a better path. Last year Larkin Street provided services to some 3,000 homeless youth in San Francisco through their comprehensive service continuum that includes early intervention, housing, educational services, and workforce development. Statistics show that three out of four youths who complete various Larkin Street programs will exit the streets.
As our 2016 Community Project, AAOE is collecting donations for Larkin Street Youth Services to ensure they are able to continue offering assistance to homeless and at-risk youth. More homeless youth today become more homeless adults tomorrow. If we can avoid youth homelessness, we can prevent adult homelessness, a much more difficult problem. For every youth that exits street life, society saves more than five times the cost of long-term intervention.
The programs offered by Larkin Street are made possible through funding by the generous donations of people like members of AAOE. Leading up to and during the 2016 Annual Conference, AAOE will collect monetary donations, as well as supply donations, to help Larkin Street Youth Services end youth homelessness and make a lifelong difference.
Monetary donations to Larkin Street Youth Services may be made on the AAOE website (https://aaoe.siteym.com/donations/fund.asp?id=14307), or as you register for the Annual Conference. During the Annual Conference, bins will be placed throughout the conference hotel to collect supply donations. Visit the AAOE 2016 Annual Conference website for details of what supplies are needed.
Actions speak louder than words. Let’s all give a little to help make a big difference. Learn more about Larkin Street Youth Services online at www.larkinstreetyouth.org.
